About The Project
Eastern Shore Coalition Against Domestic Violence was able to purchase the former G. F. Horne facility in Onancock in August of 2021 with the help of a very generous donor. This new site will house our emergency shelter, our offices and and provide additional space for meetings, educational events and storage of in-kind donations, all in one location. We're calling it The Campus.
COVID made it clear that the Coalition needed a new way to house clients. During the pandemic the previous shelter, which was a duplex, could only house one family at a time in each side to mitigate the risk of spreading COVID. Because of that, ESCADV had to shelter clients in hotel rooms, which trippled housing costs. Even before the pandemic, the coalition's shelter had a 16 bend capacity, but there was regulargly a need for 30 beds. The Campus will solve the challenge of capacity and provide an environment that will help mitigate the risk of spreading COVID.
The property comprises 3 buildings on 5 acres. First, we're renovating the building that will be our new shelter, which will be able to accommodate 30 people and will have private rooms, a communal kitchen, rec room, laundry room, vegetable garden and a playground for children staying in the shelter. We hope that the new shelter will be open in spring of 2022.
The second building to be renovated will be the future administrative and advocacy building. This will bring our staff under one roof for the first time in a long time.
In addition to office and conference room space, this building will have an exam room where a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner can perform Physical Evidence Recovery Kits for survivors of sexual assault. Renovations will hopefully be complete in late 2022.
The third building will be renovated as funds allow. It will provide storage for the large amount of in-kind donations the community generously gives to support survivors as they move from our shelter to new housing. This building will also provide a community space for clients in and out of shelter and could serve as additional shelter space in the future.
We are so excited about this new chapter in our history, and we can't wait to provide our clients with the best services possible.
